Why this is a high-leverage move
Adopting a project is the fastest way to grow your open source reputation. You're not one of N contributors — you're the new maintainer. The BreakPoint Hall of Fame makes the adoption visible. The work is real, the next user is waiting, and the original maintainer (if they're reachable) is on your side.
The 4-step path
- Find. Browse the BreakPoint feed. Filter by your stack. The project you want is here — median time from drop to first PR is 23 days.
- Evaluate. License, bus factor, last commit cadence, open issues, downstream users, original maintainer's stated reason. The full checklist is in the adopter guide.
- Contact. Always reach out to the original maintainer first. Open a GitHub issue titled "Looking to take over maintenance." The right first message is in the guide.
- Ship. Cut a release within 30 days. The 23-day median drop-to-first-PR means the original maintainer is waiting to see if you're real.
What to do this week
- Set up a magic-link account on BreakPoint so you can adopt a project when you find one.
- Browse the feed. Pick 3 projects in your stack that look interesting.
- For each, run the evaluation checklist. Look for bus factor 1 + 6 months silence + unanswered issues + clear "next steps" — that's the sweet spot.
- Open a "Looking to take over maintenance" issue on the strongest candidate. Use the template from the adopter guide.
- Within 30 days, cut a release. You're now on the Hall of Fame.
