looking-for-maintainer

A shields.io badge that signals a project is looking for a new maintainer.

The `looking-for-maintainer` badge is a shields.io badge — a small image that sits in a README and signals the project status. The badge is the README-level equivalent of the GitHub `adopt-me` topic. The shields.io service renders the badge dynamically from a query string; the URL is `[https://img.shields.io/badge/looking-for-maintainer-orange]`. Drop it in your README, and anyone visiting sees the signal.

The badge is most useful when paired with the topic. The topic is the machine-readable signal that feeds adoption indexes (including BreakPoint's). The badge is the human-readable signal that catches the eye of a casual visitor. Together they cover both discovery paths.

If you maintain a project and you're thinking about walking away: add both. The topic is for the bots and indexes. The badge is for the humans who land on your repo. The full 7-step handoff is in /guides/responsible-abandonment — start there.
